MicroElectronics Cloud Alliance MECA

Cloud approach for teaching, training and further education in the field of microelectronics

The MicroElectronics Cloud Alliance - MECA for short - brings together 18 colleges, universities and small and medium-sized enterprises from a total of 9 European countries to jointly create a cloud approach for teaching, training and further education in the field of microelectronics. The aim is to create open teaching materials, provide remote access and create shared use of training and professional user software. There will also be shared access to hardware and virtual laboratory functions.

The partners will cooperatively develop eLearning courses in computer-aided design (CAD), technology fundamentals, test procedures and applications of integrated circuits and integrated systems. The online courses will be offered as open courses to promote mobility and exchange within Europe, in this case virtually. Each university will provide the other partners with remote access to their facilities, laboratory experiments, learning environments and software systems in the form of a private cloud.

Project summary

No university today can sustainably maintain the necessary infrastructure, clean rooms and technology and retain technical experts in the multidisciplinary environment of microtechnology on its own due to the rapid pace of technological progress. Sharing laboratory experience, CAD tools, project ideas and a common infrastructure represents a new type of "educational cloud" based on a technical cloud of hardware and software.

Eight higher education institutions and eight European small and medium-sized enterprises will jointly create eLearning courses for at least 16 topics: CAD and tech, testing and application of integrated circuits and systems. They will be made available as Open Educational Resources (OER) to promote virtual exchange within Europe. Each university will also provide the other partners with remote access to their facilities, laboratory experiments and software systems in a "cloud learning system" in order to jointly circumvent bottlenecks and take advantage of new opportunities.

The tasks of eWorks in this project

  • Responsible for the work package WP5 "Development of the cloud system"
  • Development and maintenance of the project website
  • Installation of an internal platform for data exchange between the project partners (for requirements definition, document storage, deadlines and knowledge exchange - preferably with a cloud service to underline the project cloud ambitions)
  • Technical setup of the web-based eLearning environment
  • Specification of automatic provisioning for scaling the eLearning environment (depending on the current number of users and load, especially for load peaks and for mirroring online courses between the partner universities)
  • Specification and programming of a load monitoring solution for the distributed computer systems to measure bottlenecks and availability
  • Technical support for virtualization, scaling and mobility issues
  • Organization of a project meeting in Frankfurt
  • Pilot test and quality assurance
