Programming a native iPad app

Wissen schafft Werte (St. Gallen, Switzerland) offers companies advice, support and project implementation for learning and knowledge projects. Systems for knowledge transfer and learning management are designed to support employees and contribute to the integration of corporate goals at work.

eWorks was commissioned to program the iPad app "Querdenker". The knowledge app offers impulses, tools and suggestions for "lateral thinking" in daily practice. Readers can use a forum to discuss the content (social reading). Small games, exercises and many multimedia elements make the content entertaining.

Objective-C was used to program the iPad app and the HTML framework "Baker" was used for the content. The user interface was implemented as a web front end using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery web technologies. This made it possible to react specifically to the various gestures such as turning, shaking and swiping. The content can be browsed through like a digital magazine, and a table of contents with preview images was integrated for navigation. Each magazine page contains "touchable" elements that react to the user's input using JavaScript.

New content can be published to expand the app; users with an existing installation do not need to install an additional app and can download the content directly to the iPad.
